On a recent adventure near Königssee, my fiancé and I stumbled upon a dining treasure: Restaurant Hotel Neu Meran. Well, maybe “stumbled upon” is a bit misleading—my fiancé has been to this place many times since his childhood. But it was the first time for me.
It was a great weather day in May and after enjoying the charms of beautiful König Lake, we came here with friends in search of a good place to have a nice dinner. It was getting a bit chilly but still ok to sit outside and we were offered blankets should we need it, so we happily opted for a table outside where the views were stunning. But honestly after getting a peak of scenery from the terrace, short of heavy rain or snow, I would have opted for sitting outside anyway 😀
The staff were friendly and welcoming, guess it helps to be a hotel for offering hospitality to guests. I only saw one staff member but since it was not crowded at all we did not have any issues with service.
Now, let’s talk about food. We started by perusing the menu and noticed an entire page dedicated to asparagus dishes! I mean, yes I know German’s have a huge love for asparagus but a full page of different dishes with it, come on I don’t think I can even name more than 2 dishes! I do like asparagus but it is not a vegetable I crave and since Manuel (my fiancee) hates asparagus it is also not something we cook at home. (I know, I know my “German” fiance doesn’t drink beer and he also hates asparagus!!! Is he even German? )
Anyway as you can guess I chose another main dish for myself – maybe not surprisingly it came with an asparagus side though! My choice was the veal meatballs with asparagus and buttery potatoes. Actually the sauce on the asparagus was so good, that was my favorite part of the dish. My fiancé opted for the Roastbraten, a classic choice that is done a bit differently in the hotel’s signature style.
As we enjoyed our meal, we couldn’t help but note that food was actually tasting really good. You see, often places with such stunning views rely on the scenery to carry the experience, but here, the food was just as impressive. That really elevated the mood and experience. We skipped entree so we could have space for dessert and crème brûlée did not disappoint either—crispy on top, creamy underneath, and the perfect sweet ending to our meal.
Despite the slightly higher prices, the quality of the food and the unbeatable view made it all worthwhile. Hotel Neu Meran might be a well-known spot among locals and those in the know, but for me, it felt like discovering a delightful hidden gem. Especially after the crowd of Königssee.
So, if you ever find yourself near Königsee, and looking for a local restaurant with a great view check out the restaurant of Hotel Neu Meran for a drink or meal on their terrace for a great relaxing holiday moment.
PS: Just to clarify, I have no connection to Hotel Neu Meran, this is just my personal experience. In other words I found and tried this place with my own time and money. And if you happen to try it too, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
